Final list of voters is published
As promised, his staff worked until midnight, while the Chief Elections Officer himself claims to have been at his desk until almost five this morning. According to C.E.O. Urban Reyes the final election lists have been printed and publicly posted, and as a courtesy to the candidates, computer diskettes have been made available to the political parties. What this means is that if your name does not appear on such lists you can forget about voting on August twenty seventh. The only exception is those people whose names appeared on an earlier list but were subsequently stricken and the matter appealed. Conversely, the fact that your name does appear on the list does not guarantee that you can vote, as numerous objections have been lodged by party representatives and these objections will be heard in court. According to Reyes, however, many of these objections will be difficult to prove. A common one, for example, states that a particular voter does not live at the address listed on the application. Under the law this is not a valid ground for disqualification, provided that at the time of application the voter did actually live at the specified address. The final tally, subject to the court challenges, shows that ninety four thousand, two hundred and eighteen Belizeans will be eligible to vote on election day.
