Did Police Charge the Wrong Man for Motty’s Murder?

Adrian Hernandez

Last Thursday, we reported that Berkeley Street resident Adrian Hernandez was arraigned for the murder of Emert “Motty” Flowers, a sixty-two-year-old tour guide who was shot dead on December twenty-seventh, 2022 at his home on Racecourse Street in Belize City. Since then, residents as well as the mother of Hernandez are saying that Hernandez was at home at the time of the incident. The eighteen-year-old fourth form student is currently on remand and will not get to graduate. Today, ASP Fitzroy Yearwood was asked whether the investigators got it wrong and if Flowers’ killer is still at large.

“I saw something on the news that the mother was saying that he wasn’t the orchestrator of that crime, but I want to explain to you that when the investigator of a crime believes that he has enough evidence to make an arrest and makes that arrest and that matter goes in front of the court, it is then up to the court to determine who committed that time and if the person that stands trial for that charge is guilty of committing that crime. A lot of people will swear for their relatives, but that is why we have the judicial system; you have a fair trial. If you are innocent, the court will pronounce that; if you are guilty, the court will pronounce that. So I am not here to debate whether or not he committed that crime. The investigator of that crime believes that he is satisfied that the evidence is enough to bring charges against that person.”
