Bureau of Standards Chief: Inflated Condensed Milk Prices Should be Reported
Condensed milk is not an item under the price control regime, but if you find that the price of the condensed milk at your grocer is grossly inflated, you can report it to the Bureau of Standards. While the bureau has been overwhelmed with reports of price-gouging across the country, it does try to keep merchants and grocers in line. There are two options you can use: the office number in Belmopan or you can inform them on their Facebook page, as the Bureau’s Director, Jose Trejo, shared.
Jose Trejo, Director, Bureau of Standards
“We continue to do the market surveillance. I think the best way to address these concerns is where we get reports from the consumers, whether it is a ridiculous or exorbitant or exaggerated change in the price of condensed milk. We all consume these things on a regular basis so I think the best way to try and address them is when the consumer makes a complaint about it and then we tackle it like that. But given the limited resources, it’s hard to canvas the market that quickly, but I think that’s the way we have to treat it. Ideally, the best way to tackle something like this is to know what the price level is prior to any adjustments and had we known what the prices were on the market for a particular good, then it puts us in the position to decipher what the margins are looking like. We have to deploy the staff to do the research.”
To make complaints about price-gouging, you can reach the Bureau of Standards office at: eight, two, two, zero, four, four, six or send them a message on Facebook at Belize Bureau of Standards.
