PACT makes four donations to conservationists

As part of its efforts to encourage and promote the protection, conservation and enhancement of Belize’s natural resources, the Protected Areas Conservation Trust, PACT, has awarded one hundred thousand dollars to four different Conservation organizations from across the country. Green Reef, Belize Enterprise for Sustainable Technology, Caye Caulker B.T.I.A. and the Conservation Division of the Forest Department were each awarded twenty five thousand dollars to be used in their respective environmental projects. For Green Reef of San Pedro Town, the funds will be used to develop a management plan for Los Salones and Little Guana Caye Bird sanctuaries. BEST will be using the money to establish an Agro-forestry nursery in Belmopan to train ten schools and villages in the Cayo District. B.T.I.A. of Caye Caulker will be using their funds to train and employ a park guide and warden for the island’s mini reserve and to develop and print information for the Caye Caulker National Park and Marine Reserve. The Conservation division in the Forest Department will be using its twenty five thousand dollars to develop and implement a Protected Area awareness program to educate the local population on the importance of protected areas. PACT’s funding is derived primarily from a seven dollar and fifty cents fee that tourists are charged as they leave the country.
