Belizean wins Earth science award

While the Punta Rebels may be having their share of troubles in the world of copyright another resident of Dangriga is celebrating a unique triumph. As winner of the Guinness Earth Science Award he’s heading out for two weeks of adventure.
Luis Manuel Sosa, Winner, Guinness Earth Science Award
“I thought it was a joke. I thought I was dreaming. I’m like, I really won. I had to go and ask my teacher, miss I get this piece of paper and please verify it for me. She said, Luis you won. I said really, out of three hundred students that was lucky shot.”
There is reason for eighteen year old Luis Manuel Sosa to be excited. He has won himself a two-week trip to the Caribbean island of Nevis to take part in an Earth watch scientific project.

“The essay was about why I would like to win the earth watch award, what made me apply, what do I expect to gain from this award and what would I do when I arrived in Belize on my return from my research.
I expect to learn a lot especially about archaeological sites, excavating and so and come back and whatever I learn new, I can apply to Belize, especially since Belize has few Maya ruins, you know.”
Q: “Luis, you stated that Belize needs more expertise in both scientific and technological research. Why did you make this statement?”
Luis Manuel Sosa
“As we know, Belize is a growing country and agriculture down south, where I come from, is a major income earner. And so I was thinking about agriculturally wise, you know, whereby we need more testing and experimenting going on in that area, especially of the soils, in order for our crops, bananas and oranges to grow.
I’m really excited, I mean, I really want to go. I hope to learn a lot, I mean in time. I will work day by day and see what each day brings for me. I will try to make Belize proud of me, represent Belize to the best of my abilities.”
Luis Manuel Sosa left Belize today for the island of Nevis, where he will work on an archaeological dig on an old sugar plantation until July seventeenth.
