Belize Zoo is Open, but Still Recovering from Hurricane Lisa

It’s been almost six weeks since the Belize Zoo reopened for visitors after the property received damages from Hurricane Lisa. There were fallen trees and structural damages, but following weeks of cleanup and restoration, the zoo reopened on December seventeenth. Earlier today, News Five caught up with Conservation Program Manager Jamal Andrewin Bohn and got an update.

“It’s a lot sunnier than it was before [Hurricane] Lisa, Duane. Unfortunately, we lost a lot of our canopy cover. The animals seem to be enjoying the sunbathing, but as we move into the dry season and it becomes not as cool and mild, the sun will become an issue. Overall, the morale is high; we are really grateful to be reopened. We do have in our mind that our fire commitments are coming up now too, but the general running of the zoo is back on track, the animals are all out; visitors are coming through the gates and seem to be very happy they are able to just base on the feedback that they are giving us. So we are looking at 2023 with an optimistic mindset.”
