A New Ombudsman Yet to be Sworn In to Office

Gilbert Suazo

Former Ports Commissioner, Retired Major Gilbert Suazo succeeds Lionel Arzu as ombudsman, but he won’t be sworn in until parliament meets to vote on his appointment.  But that does not mean that the former Mayor of Dangriga hasn’t hit the ground running.  Despite his pending induction, Suazo has been preparing for the new post by meeting with the staff at the Ombudsman’s Office here in Belize City.

“On the ombudsman, when you asked me, I forgot, what the CEO and what the Cab Sec was mentioning to me, the ombudsman has to go to the National Assembly to be, for the assembly to vote on that appointment.  We expect to have a meeting on the third of February, so that’s when he will officially come onboard, but he had already started the work from the beginning of the month in getting himself organized and getting the office going.”
