Humane Society sponsors pet show
One of the great national pastimes in Belize, along with sex and politics, is a fascination with beauty pageants. And while the contest to be held this Sunday is no threat to Queen of the Bay or Miss Belize, it does have its share of loyal followers. Arreini Palacio has a preview.
Have you ever wondered how Rover would look in a suit and tie or if a plaid miniskirt would really flatter your pet snake? Well, worry no more, the Belize Humane Society and Animal Shelter presents Doggone Fashions, a competition to choose the snazziest, en vogue, bashment pet in Belize. According to the show’s organizer Darlene Gentle, the judges are looking for originality, creativity and a little humor.
Darlene Gentle, Vice President, Belize Humane Society
“There are six categories and they are lingerie, beach wear, bridal wear, sports wear, formal wear, beach wear and holiday wear. The holiday wear you can dress up your dogs, cats or anything in Christmas, Easter clothes or whatever occasion you may want to dress your pet in. Oh you can be as creative as you want. We would really like to see a bride and groom in the bridal category. If you have two dogs or two cats you can dress them up like that.”
The fashion show is only a part of National Pet Week, June twenty-second to the twenty-eighth.
Caroline Longnecker, Secretary, Belize Humane Society
“Throughout the week various members of the Humane Society will be going to different schools to distribute a coloring pamphlet that we have kinda put together to help the children understand the basic needs of having a pet and being a pet owner.”
So pet owners give your Rover, Snoopy, puss or your snake a treat. Dress him up and take him out to the Memorial Park this Sunday between one and five. Arreini Palacio for News Five.
The Belize Humane Society and Animal Shelter is also having a pet photo, poster and essay competition. The deadline for submitting entries is June twenty-seventh. Winners of this contest as well as the fashion show will be included in a 1999 calendar.
