Benny’s Belize Hurricanes Unveils Stacked Roster
The Benny’s Belize Hurricanes held a press conference this afternoon at the Belize City Civic Center to introduce its star-studded line up of players ahead of Friday’s matchup against the San Pedro Tiger Sharks. Last night, we showed you interviews with players from the team during their practice on Monday night. We were also at their press conference today where we heard from several players and their head coach about the outlook for this season. Several of the players also shared encouraging words to young athletes who are hoping to model them one day. Here are those comments.
Alex Carcamo, Basketball Athlete, Benny’s Belize Hurricanes
“This group right here, I am pretty impressed with what management did, because what they did was make every other organization have to step up. I am not just saying this because I am on the team, but there is no team that can mess with us. That is just facts and it is not even saying like oh we are joking, we are kidding. It doesn’t even matter. One through twelve, the minute I come out the game, somebody stronger is coming out the game and that is how it goes every single time. So, now teams are gonna have to really go out and scout and this is probably going to make Belize basketball a totally different atmosphere.”
Jamel Wagner, Head Coach, Benny’s Belize Hurricanes
“We have spoken about the flashiness and the high flying that we expect to get on offense, but one of the things we want to do as a team is push on defense. So, we are going to play for every second of every minute of the entire game. So, we are going to give it all for forty minutes and we can definitely do that with what we have here. So, that is going to keep guys in check and that is going to keep guys happy.”
Linsey Lopez, Basketball Athlete, Benny’s Belize Hurricanes
“The way we give back, we go out to all, well we nuh reach all the schools yet, but we went to EP Yorke today we we gave away some tickets and t-shirt and that give back, they will give us back by coming to the game and brining that electric vibes cause they had us feeling like we the play basketball today the way how deh mih the cheer we on. That is the way how we give back and deh wah give me back right.”
Kris Frazier, Basketball Athlete, Benny’s Belize Hurricanes
“The same thing I was telling the kids this morning when we was at school, for me it just, if you have a goal, no matter where you are at, what your circumstance is, sometimes I can relate to a lot of the people here. A lot of the kids love being around me because I can relate to Belize life like, I had nothing, I was poor, I had to be homeless, stealing from the grocery store type stuff. So, I have lived that life and I can relate to the kids and if you can relate to the kids and been through the stuff they have been through then it is easier to relate to them, easier to guide them through the tuff times. Just as somebody who has a pocket full of money, their families been great and everything and they seeing them with all kinds of different shoes. Everybody don’t have that, everybody don’t grow up the way some people grow up. But, it takes a lot of leaders to keep people guided and same track. One thing, if you got goals, don’t let nobody tell you you can’t do something.”
