Fight in Maya Mopan; Police Patrol Saved Victim’s Life
The Belize Police Department recently activated a police substation in the Maya Mopan community on the outskirts of Belmopan. That twenty-four-hour presence by officers may have very well saved the life of Wilber Rivera, a resident of the area who was the victim of an attack by four persons, including three minors. Emilio Saqui, along with the three minors, has since been charged for assault, but police say that they are yet to ascertain the motive behind the attack.
ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, Communications Director, Belize Police Department
“On Friday, we received a report from Mister Wilber Rivera where he was attacked by four persons. He was returning home from making a purchase at a nearby store. One of these persons was armed with a machete. We have since, well firstly, we had police officers that were doing routine patrols in the immediate area and they managed to detain three persons immediately. Had it not been for our officers in that area, we believe that we may have had injuries because like I said, one of them was armed. We managed to detain the other person a little later that night where all four persons have since been charged for common assault. Two of them are minors, a seventeen-year-old and a fifteen-year-old, but the adult that was with them at the time…. Actually, three of them are minors, but Emilio Saqui, twenty-five years, was charged jointly with the minors for the assault upon Wilber.”
