U.D.P. youth leader quits
After nearly ten years of faithfully serving the United Democratic Party, the president of the party’s youth movement is throwing in the towel. Ernest Smith handed in his resignation on Thursday saying he just doesn’t see where the party is headed. Smith also accused the U.D.P. of being deficient on plans to give young people a meaningful role to play in the affairs of the party. Party Leader Manuel Esquivel, however, disagrees and says it’s just a case of a strong headed youth wanting to have his own way.

“Well, I woulda like to say dat. I think dey treat dem with no kinda regards, right. It’s like the U.D.P.’s a party of like, da like falla mi if yuh want, right. Nobody no di seh like dis da the leadership of the U.D.P. and mek it trickle down and everybody, mek it feel like yuh da part a wah body right. Nothing like dat, everyday di normal trend continues and like if yuh no like the decisions that the hierarchy of the party makes, whether if wah affect young people or whatever, you just ride with di program. If yuh no like it, yuh go.”
Manuel Esquivel, Leader, U.D.P.
“He felt that somehow because of his position within the youth part of this party, the Government as opposed to the party should support him. That is not a practice that we endorse and I guess he was dissatisfied with that.”
Ernest Smith
“Everyone who has good sense knows that the U.D.P. likes promise a lat a things right. I am saying, I know most of the things are not really reality to. But I am there basically because I mi deh ina it with all a my heart and no fi no kinda personal gain. And after a period of time I realize that there is nothing there so why follow something that will lead to nowhere or an organization that will lead to nowhere. There is no future in deh for no young person unless you are one of the chosen few.”
Manuel Esquivel
“The youth arm is vibrant and in fact they have replaced him before, the young people themselves, and so there is no difficulty with that.”
A replacement for Smith is expected to be named shortly.
