Holy Redeemer Middle School hosts open day
The Parish Hall in Belize City was today used as the venue where the creative works of some Holy Redeemer School children were put on exhibition. News Five’s Julietta Burrowes reports.
Their teachers say that it is one of the biggest occasions of the year, that is, Open Day at Holy Redeemer Middle School. After months of preparation, the students of standards one, two and three have mounted an impressive display showcasing their talents and hard work.
Delcy Young, Principal, Holy Redeemer Middle School
“You know in am, with children some are very gifted in academics, some are good at arts and some are good in vocational skills. So we want to give each child that opportunity today to show what he or she is good at.”
Young says that some of the projects were so well prepared that they were entered in this year’s Children’s Festival of Arts. Each class worked as a team trying their best to link academics with the creative arts.

“The 3’s are doing the industries and they integrate what they are doing in the industries, creative writing, arts and craft, Math and so on. And you have a lot of other areas. The 2’s are working on the earth and other planets and another section is working on the food groups.”
Some of the presentations took a little more than the usual construction paper, glue and crayons.
Gliselle Marin
“Our display is on the banana industry. This display is about the products that you can make from the banana. Some of the products are the banana shake, the banana muffin, the banana cake and the fritters and also the choco banana. The banana muffin can be bought at your local super market. It brings the instructions and when it’s finished, it will look like this.”
Q: “Could I try one?”
Gliselle Marin
“Yes, I think so.”
J. B.
“Hmmm, good.”
Other projects were equally captivating such as the booth set up by Standard 2-A. Theirs is about the earth and other planets.
Joshua Edwards
“From the weather instruments we have wind vanes, anemometer, barometer and windmills.”
Q: “Those are some big words. Do you know what each one is?”
Joshua Edwards
“The windmill tells you the speed of the wind, a wind vane tells you the direction, a barometer tells you how fast the wind is blowing and an anemometer tells the way, how fast the breeze is blowing.”
Ashley Meighan
“Well in my poetry booklet I included some couplets, triplets, quadrille and some illustrated poems.”
Q: “What is a couplet?”
Ashley Meighan
“A couplet is a poem with two lines and the last word should rhyme with the second line.”
Q: “Could you give me an example?”
Ashley Meighan
“Well ahm, one that I made was “A little boy name Danny love to tease his granny.””
The combination of language arts, science and industrial skills made for an interesting assortment of displays. Some students are already talking about ideas for next year’s open day.
