Belize City Man Jailed After Failing to Pay $2010 Court Fine
Tonight, Belize City resident, Kirk Pitts finds himself behind bars after falling short on his promise to pay money towards an outstanding court fine. Back in February, Pitts was pardoned by a Senior Magistrate after making a promise that he would be paying in installments towards a two thousand and ten dollars fine which had been accumulated over a period of time. But, Pitts failed to show up to court following his commitment. As a result, a bench warrant was issued for his arrest. Today, he appeared unrepresented before Senior Magistrate Baja Shoman where he was asked why he had not been showing up for a pending case. Pitts had no reason why he failed to show up, but explained that he thought the one hundred and fifty dollars that the Senior Magistrate ordered be paid by February sixteenth had been paid. Senior Magistrate Shoman said that she had extended all courtesies to Pitts. He was ordered to serve his outstanding fine in jail time which amounted to over a year.
