Minister’s brother detained by O.W. police

Story Picture
The name of a high profile politician is in the news tonight but it is there in connection with matters of crime as opposed to affairs of state. Roberto Campos, brother of Minister of Mobilization Ruben Campos, was picked up by police at his home in Orange Walk early this morning and taken to that town’s police station. According to Superintendent Gerald Westby, Campos was one of a number of people detained for questioning in a general sweep of the northern districts. That sweep, based on police intelligence, was intended to slow down the recent increase in robberies, murders and drug smuggling in the area. While Roberto Campos was in custody he was visited by his better known brother Ruben, seen on this tape supplied courtesy of Centaur Broadcasting. Ruben was reportedly inside the station for over an hour and a half. According to police the visit was a routine effort to comfort a family member in custody and did not amount to any attempt by the minister to intervene on his brother’s behalf. Coincidentally, while in the vicinity of the police station the camera picked up a shot of Willard Jones, better known as Bill. Jones was arrested last week for his role in constructing an illegal airstrip, which was allegedly used for the importation of drugs in February. B.D.F. Major Reuel Black and Staff Sergeant Marcus Kinston were also arrested in connection with the same incident. Police officials declined to say whether this morning’s roundup was directly related to these recent arrests or whether their latest intelligence reports were generated from testimony given by any of the three men.
