Caribbean Disaster Relief Unit gets software training
While media representatives discussed their role in keeping the nation informed in the event of a disaster, members of the Caribbean Disaster Relief Unit were next door brushing up on their coordinating skills. The twenty five participants are going through the orientation phase as they prepare for their role as relief agents in the event that Belize or any other CARICOM country requests assistance in the aftermath of a hurricane or other major disaster.

“The main function of this unit really is to coordinate the receipt and dispatch of relief supplies. What will happen is that in the aftermath of a hurricane or a major disaster, they would come into the country and establish themselves probably at the airport and in some instances at the sea port to relieve the flow of sister relief supplies and basically coordinate, categorize them and ensure that they are dispatched to the warehouse or wherever they are require to be sent within the country. Here they are being trained on the supplies management system that is provide PAHO, Pan American Health Organization and they are going through the paces, familiarizing themselves with these, of the software and the handling and management of disaster relief supplies.”
The Caribbean Disaster Relief Unit was set up, following Hurricane Hugo in 1989.
