Still No Sight of Suspected Drug Plane in the South

Kareem Musa

The Belize Police Department, as well as its counterparts in law enforcement, is yet to identify the location of a suspected drug plane that is believed to have landed in southern Belize over the Easter weekend.  Despite the deployment of air assets to survey the area, they have not been able to determine where the aircraft touched down, suffice to say that it was last detected near the Belize/Guatemala border in Toledo District.

Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs

“In terms of our, the information from our neighboring countries and partners in this narco-trafficking war, they are saying that their radar detected, not last night, I think the night before, low-flying plane in the Toledo District, in the southern part of the country, and it faded off the radar.  They have a mechanism where they are saying [that] it is somewhere around the border of Belize and Guatemala, but they cannot see it.  And so yesterday, I know that the BDF did a flyover in the area and they were not able to detect it either, but that is not enough for us and so today we sent out our SPU team.  It’s a highly vegetated area, very rugged terrain, but we sent out a team of SPU officers into the region where it is speculated to have landed and so we have not gotten a report back from them as yet.  It is a very rough trek into the jungle, but as soon as we get that information we can share it you.  But no plane as of 2:45 today, no plane has been found.”
