Crime spree in Corozal: one man dead
There’s big trouble in Corozal as police report that yesterday a gang of four men went on a crime spree which has left one man dead. Around seven in the morning the gang allegedly stole a red Chevrolet at gunpoint from taxi driver Roberto Maldonado. At 8:15 that night three men driving in the same car pulled a gun on Corozal businessman Julio Gongora and made off with two gold chains and a hundred and fifty dollars in cash. A few minutes later police were called to the Halls Layout area where they found 42 year old boledo vendor Alejandro Cano with gunshot wounds to the chest and arm. They were told that he was held up by three men in a red car, who shot him when he refused to give them his money. Cano subsequently died on the way to the hospital. The scene next shifts north to Four Mile Lagoon, where police say they were fired upon by four men: Victor Sanchez, Germaine Matura, Rocky Matura and Edilberto Medina. Police shot back, hitting Medina on the heel. He was arrested but the others got away. The Maturas and Sanchez are allegedly hiding out in Chetumal where they are being sought by Mexican authorities. The stolen car has been recovered by Belize police and is undergoing forensic examination.
