Security Increased at Treasury Department Branches Following $40,000 Burglary

Joseph Waight

Thieves broke into the Treasury Department’s Dangriga Branch back in March and made good their escape with forty-thousand dollars. Reports are that the culprits pried off the burglar bars on the bathroom window to gain entry. Police have been investigating, but there have been little to no leads in that investigation. This morning we caught up with Financial Secretary, Joseph Waight in Belize City. We asked him about the incident and he told us that since the burglary efforts have been made to strengthen security at the various treasury branches across the country.

Joseph Waight, Financial Secretary

“It was really distressing to hear that it was broken in over a long weekend. The investigation is in the hands of the police. I don’t know how much leads they have. You hear stories, but those, the stories, you don’t you have any proof. What we are trying to do is find out what went wrong and to try to close the gate, you know, and to make sure that not only did Dangriga sub treasury, but the other treasuries have a heightened level of security and, and protection. It may mean having to hire round the clock guards, I mean, in addition to the camera systems. And so we were trying, assisting the police in what information we know. But really, I understand that there’s little to go on, you know, because you have to arrest and convict somebody before you get back the money.”
