Belize loses international soccer
Good evening. I’m James Adderley and step up to this version of Sports Monday. For a second week in a row we headed west to the Norman Broaster Stadium for a CONCACAF football with Real Verdes again in the role of host – this time against first division L.A. Firpo of El Salvador.
And here are the Real Verdes players in the pre-game ceremony as the Belize National Anthem plays in the background.
It’s the visitors who mount the first offensive goal but Darren Hinds sails and settles. Some 12 minutes deep, the Salvadorans get this break through against Hinds – the goal keeper goes for the ball, the striker goes down and guess what, the referee rules penalty and he simply doesn’t want a second opinion. Hinds gives the save a gallant effort but he is beaten badly by the left foot as L.A. Firpo gives up 1-zip.
It’s more offense from the Salvadorans but this press is broken up by a huge play from John Trapp. In this move L.A. Firpo has everything right except being in the wrong place at the wrong time which is ruled outside by the referee.
Again it’s Real Verdes asking Hinds to sum up with a big time serve and yes this time he makes it. At the other end, John Ismael Trapp unleashes this right foot ball that keeper to give up a corner kick.
Keep your eyes on the corner kick people. Julio Santos gets it into the danger zone – Earl Peters keeps it alive and Jess Tate moves in with a vicious header which crashes into the back of the net and at intermission we’re all tied at one a piece.
In second half the rain comes down harder but so does the visiting team as they force Hinds to dive for a low cruise missile. Talk about poor defensive positioning people: this spotkick falls behind the Verdes defense and the header from the left side gives Firpo a 2-1 lead. Still its Brent Burgess who gets a shot to tie the ballgame but his launch is right at the keeper. Hey folks give it up for Rene Montero who comes up with a big save here and he knows it.
Meanwhile people, L.A. Firpo displays good set offensive off the spotkick when this delivery beats behind as the visitors go up 3-1. Goal number four comes off this penetration from the left wing, the center beats Hinds and L.A. Firpo of El Salvador knocks off Verdes with a 4-1 blast at the Norman Broaster Stadium.
The results from the other Belizean CONCACAF contender was also damaging. On Wednesday Juventus lost to Olympia of Honduras 2-nil, drew with Alianza of El Salvador 3-3 and got blown out by Communicaciones 8-2, yesterday.
Turning to the volleyball scene, we caught up with the finals of Division II play at the Civic Center on Saturday and here are the Dangriga Grigans serving to tie the match at 1 set a piece. Solano forces this ball over the net and Little Stars simply can’t dig it out. Dangriga came back to win the second set 15-12. In the championship game Little Stars put it all together – Silvana Vanzie comes up here with this perfect smash. And here is Vanzie putting the ball over the net for a 15-13 score and the female title.
On the male side we go to the third and deciding set of the championship match as Kenroy Smith smashes and Peter Usher can’t handle to give Spikes a 6-4 lead over Mirab. It’s getting late so Mirab huddles to change the momentum at 14-11 but watch what happens. The serve goes to Mirab – the returning smash is long – Spikers goes on to win the male title 15-11.
Hey folks that’s our show for today. We certainly invite you back same time, same place. We just wanna thank our cameramen for their great work this weekend.
