Police Provide Update on Officer-involved Shooting of Wilford Dawson

Thirty-eight-year-old Wilford Dawson was injured during an officer-involved shooting on Sunday night in Gardenia Village.  That is because he allegedly refused to stand down when instructed by officers responding to the scene of a commotion at a nearby shop.  It is reported that Dawson was acting disorderly when the police officers instructed him to cease and desist.  Dawson allegedly advanced towards the policemen menacingly, wielding a piece of board.  That’s when he was shot.  Here’s more from A.C.P. Hilberto Romero.

ACP Hilberto Romero, Regional Commander, Eastern Division

“On Sunday, April 23rd, 2023, around seven p.m., police responded to reports of a male person behaving disorderly at Gardenia Village.  Police responded and whereupon their arrival they saw a male person behaving disorderly.  Police attempted to detain him at which time he attacked one of the officers with a piece of board.  The officer drew his service weapon and fired at the male person and shot him to the foot.  The person was taken to the KHMH for treatment.  Thereafter, he was released and that person has since been arrested and charged for the crime of aggravated assault.”

“Sir, is this a case, as I understand it, the man was, as many people do, drinking in front of the village‘s Chinese store and should preventive policing have stopped him from doing so earlier and if they had indeed stopped him then it wouldn‘t have ended up in a crisis point where a man had to be shot.”

Hilberto Romero

“We responded to a call from a person that was complaining that this person was behaving disorderly and passing some threats and that is how the police responded to that area and that is where the incident occurred.”
