YWCA celebrates anniversary
For the past five days the staff and members of the Young Women’s Christian Association, the YWCA, have been holding activities in commemoration of the organization’s forty two years of service. The ‘Y,’ which was founded by Lady Winnie Ward in 1956, works together with local voluntary movements and intergovernmental organizations for the overall betterment of Belize’s young and old. According to Norma Sutherland, YWCA’s President, although the public may be familiar with the organization, they do not necessarily know the various programs offered by the YWCA

“I think it has impacted positively on the development of the country, in helping women and young people and also men to have better lives. It has given people a sense of positive self-esteem and we have also helped youth to develop leadership skills and personal development all round.
We first started with a service, an Ecumenical service and then we had the A.G.M. and then we had an evening of volleyball competition with ladies from different groups and tomorrow we will be having the sports day and open house.”
The open house and sports day gets underway at eight thirty Saturday morning at the corner of St. Thomas Street and Freetown Road. Special attractions include basketball, volleyball and games, as well as displays and sales from all programs of the ‘Y’.
