Belize Files I.C.J. Memorial Asserting Sovereignty Over Sapodilla Cayes
Belize has submitted a Memorial to the International Court of Justice (I.C.J.) in The Hague, in the ongoing sovereignty dispute over the Sapodilla Cayes with Honduras. G.O.B. says that the Memorial, delivered to the Deputy Registrar of the I.C.J., Jean-Pelé Fomété, vigorously defends Belize’s ownership of the Cayes and requests that the Court declares that Belize has the sole sovereignty over the Sapodilla Cayes and that Honduras has no valid claim to them. As per the I.C.J. order dated February 2, 2023, Honduras has until December 4, 2023, to file its Counter-Memorial. The case will continue to be heard in the I.C.J. until a final decision is reached. The decision by the Belizean government to take the matter to the I.C.J. was announced by Senator for Government Business Eamon Courtenay in October 2022.
