Elroy Quinonez is Executed in Dangriga

Elroy Quinonez

Two persons lost their lives in separate shooting incidents over the past twenty-four hours. The first is a murder that was recorded on Wednesday night in Dangriga. A thirty-five-year-old father of four was targeted by a gunman who opened fire on him in the presence of two of his children. The deadly shooting happened within several yards of the family home, but who could have been so callous to carry out the daring crime? While a real motive has not been revealed as yet, the incident has left the minors traumatized and a family mourning the loss of their loved one. News Five’s Duane Moody reports from Dangriga.

This shrine at the corner of Banak and Zericote Streets in Dangriga marks the spot where thirty-five-year-old Elroy Quinonez haemorrhaged before he was rushed to the Southern Regional Hospital. Within minutes, he died while receiving treatment at the medical facility. Quinonez was shot multiple times to the body, including to the head, by a gunman that approached and opened fire on him. News Five spoke with a close cousin who says that he had just left Quinonez, when he received a text about the tragedy.

“I was at a friend’s house; she just called me and told me that her car wasn’t starting so I went over to her house to get it started. While I was over at her house, my seventeen-year-old son gave me a WhatsApp messaged and said, “Dad, please don’t tell me that the older cousin that I got to met through you just got hit him?” His friend told him that he just passed the scene and saw the same guy on the ground. So I jumped in my friend’s car and I sped off to the scene. Before I even reached the scene, I saw people on the block so I already knew that something wasn’t right. He wasn’t on the scene anymore; it was just blood on the ground so I started praying and hoping that he walk through it.”

Quinonez was sitting on a chair near this concrete fence one property across from his family home. He was with two of his sons when the gunman who was barefaced came up to them. The father of four was mortally wounded in front of his children.

“They did not even care. It was like couple steps away from my auntie home. So you try to show like you don’t care. You noh care about nothing. You could do something like that in front of his two kids. His kids were right there playing with the dogs; we have three dogs, three puppies. And you could do something like that in front of his family and not care. How we supposed to feel about you?”

Rudolph Green says that Quinonez has been targeted in the past, but managed to pull through. This instance, however, he did not survive. So who wanted him dead and why? While police have not shared a motive as yet, Green shares what he believes may have led to the crime.

“This [bleep] a willow yo; this [bleep] already been hit up so many times before he walk away from it. But it is just like people that hate pan he. People feel like we making millions of dollars ina that lee board house over there. We noh have nothing like that, yo. We just the, this [bleep] just work and hustle basically just to survive. We are surviving day to day and whatever we make off, whatever we’re doing, it goes towards our kids. So many parents, so many mothers, children ina this block that could walk by and say please fi two dollars, please fi dollar, please fi five, please fi six to go to school. He buy books for kids, he feed kids.”

“Why would they want to do something like this?”

Rudolph Green

“Hate bro. You just say jealousy, but jealousy comes with hate. It comes with over thinking, where you’re living and the whole nine yards. They just probably feel like oh you mean that you too good, like you can’t move around us, or you can’t drink with us or you can’t hang with us. We just noh mess with people; we antisocial, bredda.”

Green says that the business plan that they were undertaking is now on pause. Today, police returned to the scene to canvass the area. Duane Moody for News Five.
