Football Federation of Belize Seeks to Address Brawls at Football Matches

The Football Federation of Belize has expressed concern over three brawls that occurred during football matches over the weekend.  In the Cayo District, a fight ensued between the members of two senior men’s team from two separate villages. Amateur footage of that incident shows members of both teams physically attacking each other. There are also reports of a physical altercation during a F.F.B. male under-twenty match and an under-seventeen match. A release from the federations says “the F.F.B. categorically condemns any acts of violence or aggression within the football community. As the governing body for football in Belize, we firmly believe in the values of fair play, respect and sportsmanship.” In light of these incidents, F.F.B. says it is launching a comprehensive investigation into the matters falling under its jurisdiction. The federation says it is committed to uncovering the full details surrounding these brawls, including identifying the individuals involved and gathering the evidence. Minister of Sports Rodwell Ferguson had this to say about the matter.

“I don’t know because every time there is an event and it is official then the organizer has to organize police security and the police will determine how much security is needed for the event. Unless the event is a friendly event and not sanctioned then there is no security then something has to be addressed there. Once there is an official event then you must apply for police security.”
