Two mothers get two years for Handling Stolen Goods…
In court news, they pleaded guilty on Friday and today two young mothers accused of Handling Stolen Goods and Theft received their judgment. Twenty-two year old Nioka Smith and twenty year old Sasha Bowen cried when Magistrate Sharon Fraser sentenced them to two years in prison for Handling Stolen Goods and three months for Using Indecent Words. The charge of Theft was withdrawn against them. Court reports are that Smith proclaimed she would kill herself, while Bowen maintained that she stole to feed her one year old son because she does not get support from the child’s father. The sentences are to run consecutively. Around one Thursday afternoon, Julio Delcid, owner of Delcid Store at Mile eight on the Western Highway reported the theft to police. According to Delcid, he saw the women take a can of Klim milk and a pack of nine volts batteries and hid the items under their clothes and exited the store. The police intercepted the women on the highway and then took the cops to an open lot where they had hidden the stolen goods. It was sometime during the encounter with police that the women are said to have used indecent words to the cops. Both Smith and Bowen have a number of convictions for theft as well as pending cases.
