Belizeans arrested in Guatemala

Reports from out west say two Belizeans have been jailed in Melchor de Mencos, Guatemala after they were caught logging illegally on Guatemalan territory. Forty one year old Arnulfo Manzanero and forty year old Ruben Diaz were taken into custody on Tuesday morning by the Consejo Nacional Para Areas Protejidas and the Guatemalan military. The two men were logging in a disputed area near the Yaloush Lagoon, apparently believing they were on Belizean territory. When contacted this afternoon, an official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Belmopan said they were aware of the incident but could not say what, if anything was being done by local authorities to secure the release of Manzanero and Diaz.
