Belize Maya Forest Trust Developing Carbon Project With Multiple Benefits

Elma Kay

Carbon projects are not new to Belize. They’ve been developed and have been applied for several years now, though they were done on small scales. Now that the world is shifting to practicing safer and more environmentally-friendly methods, carbon projects are becoming grander in scale. The Managing Director of the Belize Maya Forest Trust, in northwestern Belize, shared with News Five the concept of a project that they have come up with.

Dr. Elma Kay, Managing Director, Belize Maya Forest Trust

“What we’re trying to do and what I will speak about is for the Belize Maya Forest is scaling up that effort to a forest that’s you know, trying to measure the entire, the carbon in the entire forest, which is the entire 236, 000, acres and then, you know, doing a project at scale such that everyone can, can benefit from that, from being able to have the sustainable financing to manage the reserve in perpetuity, to being able to do our community work, to also, you know, having some for the government of Belize.”
