A Look Back At The Weekend in Sports

Goodnight and welcome to another edition of Sports Monday, I am Paul Lopez. “Hard days are the best because that’s when champions are made”, that a quote from Gabby Douglas, an American Gymnast. And boy, did the Under-Sixteen Girls Football National Team have a hard day when they played against Costa Rica’s Under-Sixteen National Team in Guatemala on Sunday.  But first let me introduce you to the starting lineup. We had goal keeper Vadia Myvett, Kristel Melchur, Liah Duran, Rayne Leslie, Jasha Bernardez, Arieh King, Rian Acal, Kenya Perez, Marcelie Mar, Betsy Perez and Ella Heron. Now to the highlights of the match, courtesy FIFA

Its five minutes and thirteen seconds into the game with Costa Rica in possession of the ball. Pass to number fourteen at the top of the penalty box who fires and that one goes over the head of goal keeper Myvett. Just over a minute later, Costa Rica in possession on the far right corner. A strong pass is made into the penalty box, it finds Costa Rica’s number seven who has the gentle touch to get it into the net for a second goal.

In the eleventh minute, Costa Rica once again with possession at mid field, ball to number seven, over to the right wing, it finds number fourteen. She times it perfectly and gets off a beautiful shot that land on target. That’s three goals to zero. Here at the seventeenth minute, the ball is in the penalty box, number nine for Costa Rica finds the space and makes team Belize pay. Costa Rica’s number six plays the ball down the right wing. The much faster red jersey beats Belize to the ball. She makes a spectacular pass into the box and number nine capitalizes on that one to make it five goals for Costa Rica.

Costa Rica would finish the first half with nine goals. Belize ended that half down with zero goals. In the second half, Costa Rica sends the ball to the right wing. A play we have seen over and over in this game. The ball is sent into the penalty box. Number eight for Costa Rica finds the ball with her head and connects for a tenth goal. Costa Rica would go on to score six more goals in the second half. The game ended sixteen to zero goals in favor of Costa Rica.

And now for some local football action, yes we are talking about the Anthony Mahler Under-Thirteen Mundialito Tournament. Our highlight match features the leading team Belize United against Queen Square inside the Berger Field. Five minutes into match, Queen Square’s goal keeper makes a grave error and passes the ball to his opponent at the top of the penalty box. He launches at the goal and that one is stopped. But again he kicks and the ball goes to Belize United. Number nine finds number ten, Schae Gordon. He takes the ball into the box and fires into the goal putting Belize United up by one.

Here we are now in the third of three periods. Twenty-six minutes into this matchup. Queen Square’s defenders are caught sleeping inside the penalty box as number ten Schae Gordon once again connects foot to ball and makes them pay the price. In a last-minute attempt to breathe some life back into his team, Queen Square’s number six gets away with the ball. He fires from outside the penalty box and the ball went through the legs of the goal keeper. That game ended two to one in favor of Belize United.

On the basketball scene, we first take a look at this weekend’s continuation of the William Dawson’s Sprite-Digi Youth Basketball Tournament inside the Lopez Mateo Park. A total of fourteen games were played on Saturday. Tonight we will highlight the match between Kraal Road Boyz and the Mahogany Heights Camp. We are in the first quarter of the match. Number eleven for Kraal Road Boys with the drive in and strong lay-up. He banks the shot. Here number six finds his teammate at the three point line, back to number six who is then double teamed, leaving a player wide open on the right side for an easy jump shot

Number eleven for Kraal Road Boys with the rebound, he sends the ball flying down the court, ball is out to number one on the free-throw line who fires a deep three and its nothing but net. On the other end of the court, number four for Mahogany Heights goes up for the layup misses. His teammate gets the rebound, puts the ball back up and draws the foul. Mahogany Heights number four throws in the ball. A quick spin and shoot results in an air ball but its saved and results in an easy layup. That match ended thirty-eight to thirty-six points in overtime in favor of Kraal Road Boys.

In the Belize Elite Basketball League, the Benny’s Belize Hurricane took on the Dangriga Dream Ballers in Dangriga on Friday night in game two of their three-game playoff series. Up by one, the Hurricanes were poised to close of the series and they were able to do just that. So, that means that the Benny’s Belize Hurricanes and the San Pedro Tiger Sharks will face off in the B.E.B.L. Finals. Game one takes place on Thursday night inside the Belize City Civic Center.

And finally for tonight, the Civic Center will come alive on Saturday June twenty- fourth for the Belize Boxing Development Council’s Championship Bout. Some of Belize’s top boxers will go up against international competitors for various tittles. We will have more for you on that one as the time gets closer.

And well folks, that is all we have for you in tonight’s coverage of Sports Monday. Until Next Time, have a great week.
