Waterloo Writes to AG Marin Regarding “Definative” Agreement

We begin our newscast tonight with the latest communication from Waterloo Investment Holdings Limited to the Government of Belize regarding the contentious Definitive Agreement. Earlier today, Chief Executive Officer Stewart Howard wrote to outgoing Attorney General Magali Marin-Young in respect of the controversial contract that was signed with Portico in October 2020, a flawed agreement that was initially being embraced by Prime Minister John Briceño.  The letter begins by acknowledging the AG’s departure, amid the ongoing fiasco.  It continues to state, “you said any opinion from your ministry on the “Definative” Agreement is privileged and confidential, and rightly so.  You also stated that your ministry did not have a hand in drafting the bill to give effect to the Definative Agreement.  Before demitting office, I wonder if you would, in the greater public interest, say whether it is true that the legal opinion of the eminent Senior Counsel, Mister Douglas Mendez, was sought in the Definative Agreement and that he, being unable to opine that it was lawful and binding, was instructed not to put his opinion in writing”.  The letter comes less than two weeks before Marin-Young steps down from the post of Attorney General.
