The Public Service Union Heads into an Election Weekend
Tonight at the Escuela Secundaria Tecnica Mexico in Corozal, the Public Service Union is hosting an opening ceremony ahead of its annual general meeting scheduled for Saturday. The AGM is being held under the theme, “United We Bargain, Divided We Beg – P.S.U. Improving Condition of Service for Future Generation.” P.S.U. President Dean Flowers says that the theme is fitting, as it allows the union to reflect on the importance of collective bargaining and not being divided in these times where negotiations continue with government. But it’s an election weekend and so, we asked Flowers whether he will remain as president.
Dean Flowers, President, P.S.U.
“The post of president will be up for elections tomorrow. There is also the post of second vice president which is currently held by Brother Philip Tate. The post of general secretary, another very important post; that is held by Patricia Perez and then there are two other vacant posts for trustees as well as the assistant national treasurer and a councillor, I believe as well. We look forward to participation from our membership. I have said to those who inquire, including the national membership, I serve at the request of membership. And if it is that the support that I received tonight for the opening ceremonies, the support that I receive upon presentation of my report tomorrow for general membership as well as I have the support of membership, I will answer the call. I have never shunned away from my passion to serve. We were able to accomplish a lot as a union over the last two years. I believe that my leadership of the union is one that I can be proud of and the general membership can also be proud of; I believe I represented them well. And I believe I have been able to grow the union not only in terms of the membership, but also in terms of our assets which I believe tomorrow will reflect that we have grown by almost six hundred to seven hundred thousand dollars in assets. If I were to be re-elected as president, no doubt my next two years will be focused on investments so that we can then transform the proceeds of those investments into benefits for our members exclusively.”
