Reconvening of the Tribunal Prevents Stevedores from Striking
Today’s ESAT meeting took place two days before the twenty-one-day notice of strike would have expired. As stipulated in the act, the reconvening of the tribunal puts a stay on any industrial action. C.W.U. President Leonora Flowers believes that the move made was to prevent the stevedores from striking.

“Of course it is a tactic. In the first instance, we think the minister waited way too long to attempt or to convene the tribunal three days before the expiration. That’s way off base and CWU is looking at that seriously. So it is indeed an attempt to shut us down. We grudgingly appreciate the decision to go back to the tribunal, but we are holding our breaths baited to see what’s gonna come of it.”

“Are you confident though that the ESAT will still in fact still rule in favour of the CWU and the stevedores and that at the end of the day there will be enforcement? OUT 03:20

“I can’t speak on behalf of the ESAT, I can’t guess what they are going to come up with, but I can say that we are confident that the decision that they made was the right one and we are holding on to that.”
