Nephews Charged for Chopping/Stabbing Murder of Uncle

Two days after well-known Orange Walk jockey Anthony Deras was chopped and stabbed to death by two of his nephews, police have formally arrested and charged nineteen-year-old Myron Betancourt and a seventeen-year-old jointly for the crime of murder.  Deras, a forty-seven-year-old employee of the Orange Walk Town Council, was involved in an altercation with the minor, which began at the People’s Stadium. That’s where he was initially chopped before he made his way home. It was in the presence of his family that another fallout reportedly occurred, this time with Betancourt, who produced a knife and a machete. The two accused then proceeded to chop and stab Deras multiple times, despite cries from his daughters for them to stop. After multiple statements were recorded from those who witnessed the ordeal, the Director of Public Prosecutions concluded that Betancourt and the minor be charged for murder. Earlier this week, News Five spoke with Deras’ common-law wife Abigail Carrillo, who asked for justice.

“Yes sir, in one night. And all I can say, my common-law, he may not be perfect, but he is a hard working man. And he always, even if it is a five dollars, he puts food on the table for me and my kids. He work hard from day one and they know it. He is a hard working man. Just as time go by he get older and things get out of place and nobody’s life is perfect. We do have our ups and downs, whatever we go through I always forgive him and I hope the rest can do so cause I know they hold a lot of hatred against him for certain circumstances. But at the end of the day, he is their brother and blood. They were crying and screaming why are you chopping my dad. And they holler he already got hurt. Why? The middle one said he cannot defend himself – unu di chance him, the both ah you guys. Unu wah kill my dad! Like that she said.”

“But they could have avoid it because they could have gone upstairs because I know my father-in-law would not have let him upstairs. They could have just walked away cause he was already injured. How he will fight two of them, even with a machete.”
