Caracol Road Not a Priority, but Stay Tuned for Soft Opening
Minister of Infrastructure Development Julius Espat also gave an update on the upgrade of the Caracol Road. Phase two of that scaled-down road works project commenced back in 2021 and the ministry was able to save almost twenty-eight million dollars. This infrastructure development project is also already seeing economic benefits to villages in the area, including San Antonio. Minister Espat says that he did not see this project as a priority, but that’s water under the bridge and a soft launch will be held this year.
Julius Espat, Minister of Infrastructure Development & Housing
“The financing for the Caracol comes from the Kuwait Fund and link up with the OPEC fund; that’s a different organ and that’s on its way too.”
Duane Moody
“Where are we with that?”
Julius Espat
“Very good. We were planning to wait for the entire road to be completed to do an opening, but I am recommending to the staff that we do a soft opening because the San Antonio area is opened already, up to Pinol is completed. So I am thinking that this year we will do an opening for that section and then wait for the second section to finish and be completed to do a final opening. That’s another beautiful area. This road to me and you’ve heard me in the past I criticize more the Caracol than this one. Why? Not because of the engineering of it, but this road has serious economic benefits and it helps communities. The Caracol road that goes through San Antonio and Georgeville, I also was one of them that I agree with that part. But the part that leads from Pinol all the way to Caracol, I would have loved that road to be George Price Highway or something else where we use it on an everyday basis. It was just a matter of priority. but again it is there, contracts had been drawn, we had to be responsible and complete it.”
