New Haulover Bridge to Be Completed in December

Julius Espat

Commuters entering or leaving Belize City via the Philip Goldson Highway are very well appreciating the progress that has been made so far to the new bridge being constructed at the mouth of the Haulover Creek. There were delays, but Minister of Infrastructure Development and Housing Julius Espat told the media today that it is scheduled to be completed in December with an official launch in January. What he is most proud of are the Belizean engineers and ministry staff that have been working on this project.

Julius Espat, Minister of Infrastructure Development & Housing

“End of this year it should be done. The original estimated completion was in October, but due to some delays with equipment and material and you know everything that happened, it’s going to be completed by the end of December so I think opening will be around January. Again, yo di deal with local engineers. Woman engineer supervising it, male Belizean engineer designing and building it, local craftsmen, local workers, local Belizean engineers from our ministry supervising it. We are getting there guys. We have to promote that. I am a product of everything from primary school all the way. And all the people that I work with within the ministry, they are eager. Sometimes a situation in a ministry where they are not being respected and so you have all this talent di sit down and suck up their teeth – why I wah do anything if nobody cares? And so we give them that opportunity. We give them the opportunity – our C.E.O. and our chief engineer sits with them every week. We call a technical meeting where they go through all their concerns, they give us their advice, we put it together, we list to them and then we move on.”
