York Street Raised, Cemented, Officially Re-opened
York Street is one of the oldest arteries in the Fort George area. It runs parallel to Freetown Road and serves as an alternative to that carriageway. But its pavement over the decades has slowly deteriorated and then when the rains come, it floods, forcing the residents to wade through the water to access their homes. But today, a newly raised, cemented York Street was officially opened. It is one of several streets that the Belize City Council has done and is still doing, and one of ninety streets that Belize City Mayor, Bernard Wagner says was in the plans to get done this year. Meanwhile, Fort George Area Representative, Henry Charles Usher says that this was a project that was discussed several months ago.

“It’s a pledge that we made very early on, and I’m just happy that we could have partnered with the Belize City Council to get it done.”

“What was it was it like before?”
“Well it was an unpaved street, so, when it rained, it flooded. It left a lot of holes after the rain, and certainly the residents are happy now that this improvement has happened.”
Bernard Wagner, Mayor, Belize City
“It serves as an alternative to Freetown Road, but more importantly, about improving the quality of life for the residents in the area, right? This street here, prior to the concreting of it, when it rains, people used to walk – trod through it up to their knees in water, and I think by working along with the area rep to get this street done was one of our high priority areas.”
The Council and the Area Rep’s next street project in the area will be Pickstock Street, another one of the older streets that has deteriorated and that now contains numerous potholes.
