Minister Musa Says Opposition Leader is “Shooting in the Dark”

Kareem Musa

We also asked Minister Musa for his take on the Leader of the Opposition’s No Confidence Motion filed against Prime Minister John Briceño. The parliamentary motion is intended to demonstrate to P.M. Briceño that he no longer enjoys the assurance of the elected members of the House. Minister Musa contends that the motion will be a wakeup call for Barrow and that he needs to first demonstrate that he has the full confidence of the elected members of the opposition.

Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs

“The Leader of the Opposition has a tendency or a habit to like to shoot in the dark. This is not a Manhattan nightclub. The House of Representatives, you can’t go in there shooting in the dark. What he will realize when he takes that motion to the House is that the Prime Minister enjoys the full support of the members of the House of Representatives. Even his side, because his side might not even show up, Denise Barrow might not even show up, and so if he wants to bring a motion of no confidence, he should bring it against himself, because he cannot even inspire the four individuals on his side to show up to a House meeting to support him. And so I would be very surprised if he manages to get the full five on his side of the house to come to that house, but it’s going to be yet another embarrassing day because under this administration, and you mentioned the economy, when they left office, the debt to GDP ratio was some one hundred and thirty-three percent and we’ve brought that down to sixty-three percent,  the renegotiations and the savings that this administration has don, whether it is the Caracol Road saving money, the Haulover Bridge saving money, the Portico deal that they had negotiated was a disaster for Belize. And that is what he wants us to say we have confidence in that nonsense. No, man, Belizean people are not stupid. They’re not naive. And they know that under this administration, yes, things are tough. Cost of living went up all across the world. So, if he wants to bring a motion against every other leader in every other country, he can do that. That’s a worldwide global crisis. But in terms of where Belize has come, coming out of COVID, his administration left us in a mess.”
