Transport Minister: Strict Rules are in Place to Protect Belizean Bus Runs

The Minister of Transport, Rodwell Ferguson was in attendance at the inaugural ceremony in Chetumal along with Acting Chief Transport Officer, Peter Williams. Ferguson told News Five that the resumption of the bus route followed lengthy discussions and the ministry has conducted a proper case study since the runs have resumed, to ensure that the runs do not interfere with the runs Belizean bus operators conduct along portions of the same route. In fact, he said that the ADO can only take passengers wanting to reach Chetumal at that hour of the night because no Belizean-operated bus travels to Chetumal at that hour.

“There is no complaint from the local operator because we put that on a strict restriction to make sure that it is abided by and followed by. The arrangement is that it must be from Belize to across the border. So that has apparent, that has been kept and it has been followed. We make sure we enforce it and say that we must abide by these restrictions. You can’t pick up passengers in Belize if they are going to Corozal. Now, if I’m in Belize City and I want to go to Cancun or to Chetumal, I can catch a bus from Belize City to Chetumal or to Cancun.”
