Gas Pain at the Pump Once Again
As of today, the cost of fuel has gone up by over a dollar at the pump and there was no announcement made by the Government of Belize about the impending price hike. The opposition has been quite vocal about the exorbitant cost of fuel, despite the cost per barrel of oil remaining stable on the world market.
Mike Peyrefitte, Chairman, United Democratic Party
“If I were them I wouldn’t want to announce it either because they are ashamed. This is the same prime minister who, when he was the Leader of the Opposition, said that the only reason the prices were going up under the UDP was because we supposedly had no vision and we didn’t know what we were doing, we’re not… He is doing worse than what he claimed was bad back then. He admitted that over half of the cost of the price of fuel is from government taxes. So then reduce it and then you’ll have a manageable amount for people to pay. It is a sign that they lack vision, they don’t know how to grow the economy much less even maintain it. They only can rely on revenue that come from easy taxation, like fuel. It’s such easy revenue for them to collect because they have no other way to grow the tax base to make sure that the amount of people working and producing can produce more income for the country. On top of that, they have borrowed a billion dollars, so all they can do, their financial policy, their government policy is borrow and raise the price of fuel and on goods and services.”
