Police Remove Two Weapons from Off the Streets
The proliferation of deadly weapons in the streets of the country has long plagued the Belize Police Department in its efforts to gather intelligence on where these guns are coming from and when they’re used in crimes. On August twenty-fifth, an arsenal of firearms, as well as a high-powered rifle, was discovered after being shipped to Belize from Miami. On Tuesday evening, the department was able to remove two of those weapons from the reach of criminals, one of them being an AK-47 assault rifle.
Both discoveries were made in San Pedro, the first of which occurred around four-thirty in the evening. Police say they conducted a joint operation at the residence of twenty-four-year-old Jaylil Usher, in the San Mateo area of town, when they found the prohibited weapon with a magazine wrapped in a pillow. Usher was detained pending charges. The second discovery occurred at around nine-thirty that night during a joint operation in the same residential area, but this time, the find was made in an open area. There, police found a black Taurus brand nine millimeter pistol with an empty magazine and labeled and deposited the gun as found property.
