Haiti Needs Extra Security, Can Belize Assist?
And finally from the U.S. delegation’s visit to Belize, the United States is in discussions with its multilateral partners about the instability in Haiti. At the United States’ request, Belize is presently weighing the possibility of providing personnel in support of a potential multinational force in Haiti. There is no concrete commitment in place as yet, but if these talks actually take shape, Belizean soldiers could be travelling to Haiti to offer security support.
Danile Erikson, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense
“So, the U. S. has been deeply concerned about the deepening insecurity in Haiti and the fact that the Government there and the Haitian National Police has been very challenged by gangs in Haiti. Right now, we’re in the process of holding multilateral conversations with a variety of different countries, both within the region and beyond the region, to see what can be done collectively to address the challenge in Haiti. We would welcome Belize to be a part of that conversation but there is no firm plans at this time in terms of a Belizean contribution.”
