Drunken Drivers Destroying City Property Weekly
Last night, we told you that a taxi operator was arrested in connection with the destruction of the Phillip Goldson bust on Saturday morning. Thirty-four-year-old Mervin Domingo was charged for driving a motor vehicle with alcohol concentration above the prescribed limit and driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention. Mayor Bernard Wagner says this is not an isolated incident. He noted that drunken drivers destroy city property on a weekly basis, and he says that he is fed up. Here is what he told us on Thursday.
Bernard Wagner, Mayor, Belize City
“I refer to that again with our driver sin the city, breaking up public infrastructure all across the city. At some point in time they have to be able to take ownership of the breaking up every week at City Council we have something where someone run into a lamp post light. They run in, mien our drivers are reckless and we need as the police, as the traffic officers, to begin to hold them accountable. Now with the bust, it is unfortunate that occurred at that time of the night, when the jouvert is starting and everyone is high. We as leaders have to begin to look at enforcing DIU, drinking and driving, we have to enforce that cause the city can no longer continue, watch the traffic light at Vernon Street. It was a dalla van that ran into that and now causing a whole heap of problems for other residents in the city, because of one drunken driver.”
