Resurfaced Pickstock Street is Inaugurated on National Service Day

This afternoon in Belize City, to coincide with National Service Day, the newly concreted Pickstock Street, where Right Honorable George Price grew up and lived all his life, was inaugurated.  The official opening of the street was done by Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner and Fort George Area Representative Henry Charles Usher, the grandnephew of the Father of the Nation.  Usher gave a brief history of the Price family home on Pickstock Street, as well as the significance of that address.

“The Price family home has been here almost as long as the street was named.  Originally 114 Pickstock Street, later renumbered Number Three, the property was owned by Captain William Cadle Price, the father of George Price.  He kept stables here and invested in racehorses right in there.  Hard to imagine isn’t it, but few would know that the Father of the Nation was an avid fan of horseracing, more than likely influenced by his father.  This was the only home that George Price ever knew, he lived here his entire life and still slept in the bed left to him by his father, up until the time of his death.  Unbelievable humility and discipline.  You may be asking why we’re going down this historically journey when we are here to open a street, but the reason I am saying this on National Service Day, on the twelfth anniversary of the passing of George Price is because I believe that we must live his legacy.  I believe that what he left us is national heritage, we must be able to preserve what George Price left us and that’s why it’s important that we maintain and preserve the Price house for generations to come.”

“It really captures everything George Price is all about, about service, and da noh only the fact that his residence is on this street, but the main fact is about giving back to the people eena dis community.”
