P.U.P. National Executive Meets to Discuss 2024 Municipals

The leadership of the People’s United Party met at Independence Hall this morning where the national executive discussed a number of issues as it relates to the municipal elections slated for March 2024.  According to the chairman of the ruling party, as many as one hundred and twenty-five applications were turned in, indicating a growing interest among Belizeans across all nine municipalities to participate in the national vote next year.  But where does the hierarchy of the P.U.P. stand on the Belize City Council debacle where Deputy Mayor Alan Pollard was intent on running against incumbent Mayor Bernard Wagner?  Earlier today, P.U.P. Chairman Henry Charles Usher spoke with reporters at the conclusion of the meeting and informed that the national executive has accepted recommendations made by the national campaign manager.  It is also confirmed that a convention will be held in Belize City on November fifth; however, Usher stopped short of sharing whether it will be an endorsement of Mayor Wagner’s candidacy.

“The national executive met in regular session this morning and we got a full report from the national campaign manager in reference to the nine municipalities.  As you may know, vetting committees were established in each of these municipalities to go over all the applications.  Just to recap, we got a hundred and twenty-five applications countrywide.  There were twenty-four applications for mayor and a hundred and one applications for councilor candidates.  So it was, you know, we went through all of those with the national campaign manager and the recommendations being brought forward and the national executive approved the recommendations made by the national campaign manager.”

“How does that number compare to what was submitted for the previous municipals?”

Henry Charles Usher

“I don’t remember the numbers from the previous municipals, but it’s certainly more than the last time.”

“So in relation to deputy mayor [Alan Pollard] or Belize City, will Mayor Wagner be endorsed as your mayoral candidate?”

Henry Charles Usher

“The recommendations coming were approved but we have to reach out to our candidates first.  We can’t allow the media to have that first, we have to reach out to all our candidates countrywide before we can make it public.  That’s fair enough, don’t you think?”
