Belize U-23 Volleyball Team to Take On Nicaragua for Silver in Panama
Belize’s Under-twenty-three men’s volleyball team is competing for silver medal on Saturday at the Central American Championship in Panama. Team Belize has won three of its last five games which put them in a position for second place. But, the silver medal is still up for grabs and our national team must maintain its composure and beat Nicaragua in the final match. We spoke with Assistant Coaches, Bryton Codd and Elton Anderson.
Bryton Codd, Assistant Coach
“Right now a lot of teams have the same ratio in terms of wins, lose. And so, it is critically important to win in three and win as quickly as possible. Our game on Saturday is going to be for second place. We just need to win because there was an upset yesterday where Panama defeated Nicaragua in five. That put us in a better position to just win and walk away from this tournament with a second place. The worst case scenario is we lose in five and get bronze. But we are going for the silver tomorrow. Right now most of the teams, Nicaragua, Belize, Salvador and Costa Rica have the same amount of wins and lose. So it is important we just play our hearts out tomorrow against Nicaragua.”
Elton Anderson, Assistant Coach
“The first place is a bit out of reach cause Guatemala has already won four games. But, like you rightfully said, the second all the way to the fourth and fifth place teams we are in the same bubble. So like Bryton rightfully said, it is very necessary that we just win tomorrow. Right now we just control our own destiny with the past two wins over Panama and Honduras where we won convincingly in three sets and garnering all maximum points. So we control our destiny tomorrow by just winning outright and get second, loosing in five and get third. So, the podium is right there for us.”
