P.C.C. Commissioners Have Been Operating Without Allowances
And, it is not only the vendors who are feeling the pinch. According to Chairman Chanona, for the past six months commissioners have been executing their tasks using their own funds. After spending hundreds of dollars out of pocket on fuel and other expenses, he says provisions are now being made for commissioners to receive their allowance.
Anthony Chanona, Chairman, People’s Constitution Commissioner
“They now make provisions for allowances. We are now going to be addressing these back payments. Commissioners have been working, traveling since April without receiving a dollar. We have started this week to make those payments. The entire structure of our public outreach is built on the backs of our commissioners. And, they are commissioners that have been working from July; I mean putting in times in their zones and have not gotten a dollar. That is going to be regularized. It speaks to the structure of the way government work. And it is an opportune time of constitutional review to see how we can build greater efficiencies for the people’s money to be spent not cavalier but more efficiently in all aspects of government business. The issue of accountability and transparency need not come at the expense of time. WE can create not private sector efficiency but greater efficiency in the way the public sector pays the people’s money.”
