Oscar Selgado Says He Is “Innocent Until Proven Guilty”

In the phone recordings played in court, Ramirez is heard telling the Commissioner of Police and the DPP that he received death threats and as a result, is afraid of the consequences he may face if he was to testify in person. The DPP is then heard explaining to Ramirez that her job is to ensure that perpetrators face the consequences. But, Ramirez never budged from his position. He told the DPP “You and I know the power that he has”. The Commissioner of Police is then heard asking Ramirez what makes him think Selgado would actually kill him. His response was that “He has the money at his disposal, man the kill people fih a thousand, fifteen hundred right now. If he could do that to an old lady, what would he do to a young, healthy, strong person”. Selgado also took the stand today. From the stand he denied having any communication with a person by the name of Giovanni Ramirez. He also denied hiring anyone named Giovanni Ramirez to kill Maryln Barnes. Selgado was allowed to continue practicing law in spite of the allegations against him. Today we asked him about that.

Oscar Selgado, Accused of Abetment to Commit Murder

“Thanks the Constitution of Belize. The constitution of Belize provides that every person is innocent until proven guilty. So unless a person’s confesses to an allegation or is found guilty by a court, that person should not be deprived of his means of livelihood. This is my means of livelihood. It will be unjustifiable and be punishing me further if the General Legal Counsel was to say let him be disbarred for the period or suspended for the period.. How will I eat? It is my presumption of innocence, my constitutional rights that trumps any allegation and not only for me, for everybody.”

“Can you provide an update where that matter stand with the GLC?”

Oscar Selgado

“As far as I am concerned that matter is concluded. I don’t know if there was a decision outright but I know the GLC discontinued the hearing from whenever it was. I even lost track of it, but I don’t want to comment about it because if there was no decision the matter is before the GLC. But I have no fear of the GLC as it relates to those allegations.”
