King Tides in Caribbean Shores
Rising sea levels and erosion have been documented along coastal communities and, in some cases, persons have had to relocate as a result of the washing away of their properties. In certain areas of Belize City, king tides have been increasingly inundating streets and seawalls in several areas are the only barriers separating homes from the sea. There have been serious concerns in the Caribbean Shores, specifically in the vicinity of the municipal airstrip where, during high tide, the water level rises above the seawall. Area Representative Kareem Musa says that he’s seen the videos.

“Huge concern, as you can see with global warming that has taken place over the years. That area that is affectionately known as the hanger area of our constituency, whenever it is October we do notice that the very high tides and the waves come in and actually go over what is left of the seawall. And so, I spoke with the Minister of Infrastructure this morning when I saw the videos and we will be making a request for the ministry to intervene and helpfully come up with a plan – not just to fix the streets, but to fix the entire seashore area in the hanger area of Belize City.”
