Leader of the Opposition Critiques Government’s Choice for S.S.B. Loan

Opposition Leader Shyne Barrow, criticized the government for the loans that S.S.B. provides as investment. Barrow said he knows of hundreds of Belizeans with worthwhile investments who have gone seeking loans at S.S.B. and have been turned down.

“The S.S.B. has so much money to invest, because now they claim there’s a $100 million problem, right? That is the argument. That they have $100 million that they have to lend, but I could give you hundreds of Belizeans that have large scale, worthwhile investments that have gone to SSB and have been turned down.  So, is this an instance of them picking and choosing who they will give, where they will spend so that they could have that municipal elections money? It definitely begs the question, but it is concerning that these monies are coming, 114 days before the municipal elections in the case of the distillery. Again, what is the urgency for that when we have urgencies, in so many other areas – the healthcare, we still don’t have  proper equipment.”
