Reflecting on Human Rights in Belize

Janelle Chanona

The Women’s Parliamentary Caucus hosted a crucial forum commemorating the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Belize City this morning. The event convened diverse stakeholders, including government officials, civil society, and human rights advocates. Discussions centered on the enduring principles of human rights, exploring contemporary challenges and fostering collaborative efforts to ensure the continued relevance of human rights protections. Chairperson of the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus, Senator Janelle Chanona, says that the forum served as a platform for meaningful dialogue on the topic.

“I think as we’ve seen globally, rights are not static and that there has been changes in rights, and I think it’s important, states, citizens, leaders across sectors to really, as I said, come around the table, have those conversations and really make sure that we’re safeguarding the integrity and the sanctity of human rights and advancing them where there are gaps. I think that ultimately we’re human beings and we’re all persons equal, born free under the law. Justice Moore gave an excellent historical perspective this morning and it’s just really important for us to make sure that as we look to the future after 75 years of these sets of rights being in existence that we’re  building on that, and we’re protecting that. And I think that it’s really crucial that believes as a signatory to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is looking at being a key player and leader on that.”
