BML workers back on the job after CitCo makes small payment
There is some good news coming from City Hall. On Monday, the Belize Maintenance Limited, BML, sent home about a hundred of its sanitation workers because the Belize City Council could not cough up the ten thousand dollar weekly payment to the company. Sanitation Councillor, Philip Willoughby could not say when the Council would be able to come up with the money. That was because the Council’s Revenue Department had not met projected collections. But News Five has learned that since the beginning of the week the department made aggressive efforts to step up collections. Today B.M.L. owner, Lawrence Ellis, confirmed that he had received a cheque from City Hall. Ellis said while the cheque was for forty-three thousand dollars, the City Council is still in arrears with his company. He added that he was not given any assurances by the council when other payments will be made. This means that the workers who had been sent home earlier this week are back on the job.
